How should government regulated a businesses practices?
Q. Okay let s start from the beginning. With the dying job market there will be a increased interest in alternative ways to make money for the average American. The option most Americans will probably be looking toward will be new/small businesses. The government s red tape combined with the competition makes it virtually impossible for a new business to survive. If the government were to lessen their control over small businesses by means of zoning laws, permits, inspection costs, and taxes, the possibility of creating a new business would become a more viable option for mainstream Americans. Though American should not expect to become super rich, rather instead hope to make enough to replace the income they lost. For the business that… [cont.]

A. An interesting and lengthy question that possibly deserves an equally lengthy answer. I have worked for various companies. Everything from a family owned business that employed 3 family members, to a large Wall Street firm that employed roughly 40,000 people. The issue that we have here is that in trying to regulate businesses, it's as if the government is trying to please everyone...and in doing so, they please no one. Like the saying goes, "You can't just be a little bit pregnant". As a shareholder in a wide range of publicly traded companies, I have had a few of my common stocks go to zero, while the companies filed for bankruptcy (Lehman Bros. and WaMu are just 2 of them). Even though it cost me money personally, I am thinking… [cont.]

A. Absolutely! The 10th Amendment states "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." Basically, unless the Constitution says the federal gov't should be doing something, it shouldn't be. If you read the Constitution, you will see no authorization of power for the gov't to provide Social Security, Medicare, education or Obama's new health care plan. Those programs and many others should be scrapped as unconstitutional unless it is specifically defined that the federal gov't should be doing that. See Article 1, Section 8 for that list of powers the gov't actually has. The federal gov't should also be silent on issues such… [cont.]

Why should the Federal government have the ability to preside over issues like abortion and same-sex rights?
Q. Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage, The Death Penalty, Education, etc. should all be in the hands of the states! Why should the government be able to make decisions on these issues, point on point. Who's saying our Federal Government has the best judgment? Let the people decide on these issues in their respect states, and create state competition. Why do we tolerate the government in our lives, in social issues such as these? How much money should the government spend in government expenditures to eliminate this gap?
Q. Calculate the GDP gap if in an economy the unemployment rate is 9.5%, MPC = .9, and the Full employment GDP = $10,800. Calculate the regular expenditure multiplier and the net tax multiplier. How much money should the government spend in government expenditures to eliminate this gap?
Asked by tiPtRaN - Thu Jan 17 02:17:16 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The regular expenditure multiplier (assuming a closed economy and lump sum taxes) is: 1/(1-MPC) ==> 10 The tax multiplier (again assuming a closed economy and lump sum taxes): -MPC/(1-MPC) ==> -.9/.1 = -9 As for the gap, according to Okun's law, unemployment will be 1% point above the natural rate for every 3% that output is below potential output. I can't tell from the question what the to assume for the unemployment rate at full employment. To keep things simple I'll use the Beveridge estimate of 3% structural unemployment. If you're using the NAIRU, you would choose 0%. Therefore, 9.5% unemployment is 6.5% above the potential rate. This imples a 19.5% gap between full employment GDP and actual GDP. The gap is therefore .195 x… [cont.]

A. I think the key term in your question is "illegal." If it is illegal to download music in certain forms, surely you can't be suggesting that breaking the law is okay. Not to mention the fact that the illegal downloaders are getting three chances to be warned. Depending on how the downloaders are being identified, it may or may not interfere with one's privacy - access to an ISPs records is an answer for the country's court system.

A. Anyone who says it is just democrats who don't want welfare reform is full of sh*t. I think both democrats and republicans will keep welfare the way it is for the most part. Neither are interested in losing a potential voter. Besides, congress doesn't worry about social security as they have a pension plan, so they don't care what happens to the publics pension plan.

Q. Isn't this a form of socialism in that the Federal Government is subsidizing property owners by letting them write off the interest on the taxes? My grandfather bought a house in 1939 for 5600 and it was 5 times as large as the dinky towhouses we pay 450,000 for today. It's an enormous fraud by the international bankers. The Federal reserve is NOT an agency of the United States of America. It is a private corporation that has never been audited! The federal reserve is unConstitutional, indeed, anti-Constitutional. A. The Constitution requires each state to have a republican form of government. There is no requirement for 3 branches, although all states have three explicit branches; there is no requirement for a two-chambered legislature, although all states except Nebraska have a two chambered legislature. States, of course, are affected by the Supremacy clause and thus all other laws passed by the national government. But in terms of Constitutional requirements, that's it.

Should government cuts start with trimming the number of politicians?
Q. There are 29,000 professional politicians in the UK. This is a ridiculous amount. Why should the British public stand aside and allow vital public services such as health and transport be cut in this recession (I work as a railway engineer and we have had our track renewal workload cut by 30%) while the bloated, generally venal and corrupt political class get out of jail free. I suggest a taxpayers revolution whereby everyone witholds taxes until the axe falls on unnecessary government committees, overpaid mandarins and incompetent local authorities. Anyone with me?
Asked by Dan M - Fri Jul 24 11:02:18 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You make a very good point, why indeed do we need 29,000 prof politicians here in UK? An Indian pal of mine asks, how come in India they've only got 500 MPs with hundreds of millions of people, yet here in UK we've got 650 (approx) and only about 60 something million. Time for a massive cull. We should also have laws in place which make it illegal for any unelected person to serve in any government post. Mandy, pack your handbags doll, your out. Edit: during the British Raj the British ran India with a mere 3,000 civil servants, mostly Indians. Mind busting.

A. This is by no means comprehensive. Ethanol is a good example of the government subsidizing a very bad idea with has caused a spike in corn prices which affest the consumer. Usually the government interferes indirectly by allowing subsities or enacting, tightening or easing tariff which will favor a certain foods production over another. The government could adopt a true free market system and let the market find it own equilibrium which would be best for everyone.

Either by causing employers to drop coverage or just by the fact it my be cheaper to get it from the government. Won't the government have every incentive to change rules to get as many people on the government program as possible?

A. It really is not possible, and the democrats know it. Their ultimate goal is to have everyone dependent on the government for their health care. They really want a single payer system. In this video it shows Obama talking about it as well as other democrats. They are fully aware that it will drown out private insurance.
