A business (also called a company, firm and enterprise) is a legally recognized organization designed to provide goods and/or services to consumers. Businesses are predominant in capitalist economies, most being privately owned and formed to earn profit that will increase the wealth of its owners and grow the business itself. The owners and operators of a business have as one of their main objectives the receipt or generation of a financial return in exchange for work and acceptance of risk. Notable exceptions include cooperative enterprises and state-owned enterprises. Socialist systems involve either government agencies, public ownership, state-ownership or direct worker ownership of enterprises and assets that would be run as businesses in a capitalist economy. The distinction between these institutions and a business is that socialist institutions often have alternative or additional goals aside from maximizing or turning a profit.

The etymology of "business" relates to the state of being busy either as an individual or society as a whole, doing commercially viable and profitable work. The term "business" has at least three usages, depending on the scope — the singular usage (above) to mean a particular company or corporation, the generalized usage to refer to a particular market sector, such as "the music business" and compound forms such as agribusiness, or the broadest meaning to include all activity by the community of suppliers of goods and services. However, the exact definition of business, like much else in the philosophy of business, is a matter of debate.

Business Studies, the study of the management of individuals to maintain collective productivity to accomplish particular creative and productive goals (usually to generate profit), is taught as an academic subject in many schools.

Opening a business and wondering what types of expenses I can write off?
Q. I am opening an online business for website design. (set up as a LLC, I'm the sole owner) Should I start keeping receipts of all business related expenses? Or would my business qualify as a hobby if I don't make a certain amount of money in the year that I'm filing. What types of things can I write off onto my business? (dinners, gasoline, etc.) Do I need a seperate business credit card/bank account for the expenses? Do I have to accept payments towards the business's services through a corporate account, or can they make the check/payment directly to me?

A. You need to keep accurate records when running a business. This will be your best defense if you ever get audited. For IRS purposes, you need to make a profit every 3 out of 5 years to have the IRS prove that you are not running a business. Otherwise, it is up to you to prove that you are running a business and not doing a hobby. You can prove that you are running a business by keeping your business accounts and personal accounts separate. You can write off any legitimate business expense including dinners with clients, car expenses, equipment, etc. Having a separate checking account and credit card is a good idea. However, it isn't necessary. You can comingle your business and personal expenses using your personal accounts. But, [cont.]

What does a business analyst do? What course do you take to become a business analyst?
Q. I came across a chart showing the avarage salaries of business analysts in IT/Computer software/Computer hardware. I do not know what a business analyst does exactly. What course should I take in college to become a business analyst. Currently I'm planing on getting a degree in Business with IT in college, will that enable me to become a business analyst?

A. Yes, the courses you speak of will help you to become a Business Analyst. A BA can be on the client side or the IT side. If on the client side, they are interfacing with work group domains that process the work and review what they need. They generate requirements and then work with the IT side to update or generate processes and applications to fullfil the business needs. If you're a BA on the IT side of the house, then you're taking all the requirements and developing processes and application solutions. Your job is to work with the client to generate a business solutions document (there are many names for it) and get signoff. Then, you need to make sure that solution becomes reality by working with systems analysts, programmers,… [cont.]

What kind of business/registration licenses do you need for a cleaning business or something similar?
Q. I'm hoping to open a decorating service business where I rearrange people's furniture, and am wondering how service oriented businesses such as cleaning businesses, vacuuming businesses, and even home computer repair specialists operate. What do I need besides a business license? I've already got a lot of my business plan done.

A. you will need to get Bonded, get health insurance if you have employees , in case of injuries you also need insurance , you will need more than 1 vehicle and this will cost you a lot for car insurance gas, license plates and maintenance ,you need to register your business , look into Incorporating if you do it's a safer way to go but more expensive , in case things shouldn't work out if you will have debts they wont come after your assets like your home or car. You will need a place or office to operate your business from therefore rent and insurance ,plus utilities , advertising is a must to promote the business .
