Are there laws about contact between purchasers of auctioned storage rental contents and the previous owners?
Q. When people rent out a storage space and then do not pay, the contents are very often auctioned off. Is there any reason legally that the auction purchaser of these contents cannot contact the former owner or a relative of the former owner? The reason for contact would be to find out if the person or any of the family of this person might like to have personal family effects (photos, documents) found in the boxes in the storage building. Would the person who bought the contents at auction be unreasonable in asking for a fee for their trouble in returning family effects? Thanks!

A. There are no laws that I know of that prevent you from contacting the prior owners. I'm sure many of them would be overjoyed to get family photos back. However you need to realize that you will not want them to know your name/address, ect. Meet them only in a very public place to make the exchange. Make sure you also have the document that shows you purchased the storage unit items. That way if they call the cops on you, you have proof with you, that you are not an idenity theif, or trying to blackmail them, or any other nasty thing people might state. Remember, they are probably not pleased they didn't have the money to pay for the storage unit. Also be aware the items might have gone up for auction because the owner died (happened… [cont.]

Does the amount of time an item is auctioned for on ebay affect its final selling price?
Q. It would be logical to think that the longer an item is auctioned for, the more money you can get but I have noticed that many items are not bid on until that last hour or so. So in the end, isn't it better to auction an item for the minimum amount of days to make money faster or is there some financial advantage to making the auction longer? Any additional advice would be helpful.

A. I think you'll notice that most serious bidders do go for items within the last few minutes and seconds of an auction. However, in saying this, I think there are a couple of ways to increase your chances at a higher selling price. Your best bet would be to consider where your item is most demanded and set the time that your auction ends to a peak-hour time in that area. For instance, if you are a stamp collector with an Iranian stamp, you'd figure that most of the demand would be in Iran. So you set it so your auction ends during peak hour in Iran and hopefully more people will be aware and awake to purchase such an item. If you are selling an everyday item such as a lamp, then this may not be as necessary. Also, the longer you have the… [cont.]

In India Cricket players as a team are publicly auctioned. Is this ethical and legal ?
Q. Rich people and celebrities own cricket teams purchased in auction much like Indian elite buy and bet on herds of fighting bulls, fighting rams and male version of hens. It is illegal and considered unethical .Does such auctions occur outside India and or players of any other game ? Can money enslave humans ?Is slavery allowed if slaves are paid higher amounts for their work ? How is this qualitatively different from bonded labor ?

A. The same things happen in club football. If a club wishes to buy a player who's a free agent or belongs to another club, he has to compete and bid with other clubs similarly wishing to employ him. It also happens in club basketball, baseball, rugby etc. It was only a matter of time for cricket to become a part of this culture as well. Not that I approve of what T20 cricket and IPL has made of this once gentleman's sport.
