A spectrum auction is a process whereby a government uses an auction system to sell the rights to transmit signals over specific electromagnetic wavelengths. Depending on the specific auction format used, a spectrum auction can last from a single day to several months from the opening bid to the final winning bid.

Countries

Sweden

On 2008-05-08 Sweden's Post- & Telestyrelsen, PTS concluded an electronic 16-day SMRA auction, (Simultaneous multiple-round ascending) for nine 15-year 4G-licenses for a total bandwidth of 190 MHz in the 2,6 GHz band. The total required minimum bids were SEK 50,000,000, but the total winning bids were SEK 2,099,450,000 or USD 38.60 / inhabitant.

USA

In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) conducts auctions of licenses for electromagnetic spectra. The FCC has been conducting competitive auctions since 1994 rather than assigning spectra through comparative hearings (under which the specific merits of each applicant is litigated), or through lotteries. FCC spectrum auctions are open to any company or individual that is determined by the Commission to be a qualified bidder.

Canada

The Canada 2008 Wireless Spectrum Auction beginning on 2008-05-27 Industry Canada commenced an auction for 105 MHz of spectrum with 40 MHz reserved for new entrants. The auction concluded on July 23rd, 2008 after 331 rounds and raised $4.25 billion.

Q. As , I am sure most of you know Google is thinking or is (?) , going to place a bid in the auction for a wireless spectrum , and if they did , they would offer high-speed , Free or near free , wireless internet , phone services ,and possibly tv . Does anyone know if they have finished bidding or if Google has bidded , also Who else thinks Google should try to take over the world .

A. I do not think they have bidded yet and the auction sounds like it hasn't taken place yet... it is due to happen by Jan 28, 2008 so I would look for the bidding to take place probably late November or early December. I don't think Google should take over the world because like anything else that takes over the world, it puts the people in it into a lot of pain. Too much power corrupts. However, I do like many of Google's services and I think they have a pretty good head on their shoulders for being the size they are. They remain steadfast in sticking to their don't be evil motto and continuously open up new technologies for free. Once they start charging for everything and hussling the little guy, then it would be time to decapitate… [cont.]

The use of wireless frequencies can cause a negative externality: while an infinite number of frequencies exist in principle, if two companies operated on frequencies that were too close to one another, their signals could mix and become garbled. To avoid this problem, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) [cont.]

Car repossessed and auctioned now I owe $13000, any way I can get a break on this? It was a 16k car. Kia.?
Q. I bought the car in 2008 or financed it anyway, the loan was 16k for the car w interest included, it was a 2007 Kia Spectra, I got laid off from my job so I could no longer make payments on it, so I voluntarily had i repossessed. They auctioned it and I ended up with $13000 remaining on the bill. Is there any way I can get this taken care of for less? I'm not sure how I got so little for the car and how they expect me to pay 13k now, since I couldnt pay it then. If anything this experience has taught me to not get a loan. I'm 23 years old and now owe 13,000 dollars. Not sure what to do.

A. I know it's not a good suggestion but if you file bankruptcy you may be able to include the debt into it. It is possibly the only way you can avoid paying this debt, otherwise you're stuck. Try to work out something with your lender for more affordable payment.
