How do the Dutch people feel about interracial relationships?
Q. My sister is in one with Dutch man and he wants her to come visit him in the Netherlands. I am worried about the way she will be treated there.

A. I agree we are much easier about it than some others, but there are differences. If he is from a smaller place in the country, people are just not so used to seeing people of other races and/or cultures, so there might be a bit of a culture shock - but that wouldn't mean she wouldn't be welcomed. My family, from a conservative background in the East of the country, had to swallow twice when I came home with an American wife of Spanish decent - but they have always treated her extremely well..

A. Talk with Dutch people. The people I know who have learned Dutch as second language and actually speak Dutch as much as possible do best. The interaction makes it so much better, and if they are native speakers you will get the best kind of instructions, the best examples of people using the language they have been brought up in. When you have a little Dutch to start with, tell everybody you do not speak English anymore, that way you will improve most. If you do not have native speakers near, you can try contact over internet, or if you need to practice your pronunciation, by telephone. If you have any specific questions ask here or e-mail me. How do you season a dutch oven?

A. I have written 2 cookbooks on camp Dutch oven cooking. Here is an excerpt from my little section on seasoning. "Seasoning: Cast iron may be heavy, but with a proper seasoning, is the greatest type of metal to cook in. But, you need to keep your cast iron free from rust and well seasoned to make it stick free . When someone buys cast iron from the store, the foundry (manufacturer) coats the pot or pan with a coating of some sort to keep the item from rusting. This is done by spraying with a type of varnish or dipping it into hot paraffin wax. This protective coating must be cleaned off before seasoning your cast iron. If your Dutch oven is made by LODGE, the protective coating is a sprayed varnish coating, which must be scrubbed off. Heat… [cont.]
