What kind of government assistance is available for a 62 year old with nothing?
Q. My father is 62, lost his job with Countrywide, has no money or retirement savings. I don't have the money to support him and am wondering what kind of government assistance is out there to help someone in his situation.

A. welfare and food stamps probably. But, if he just got laid off - he should be able to file for unemployment for 6-9 months and when that's done, he could always put in for early social security benefits (he's 62, he's eligible) if nothing else comes along

What type of assistance can my elderly and disabled mother receive?
Q. She was married for 20 years and recently found out her husband will be going to the federal penitentiary. She is losing her home now and recently had a very serious stroke because of the stress and is now permanently disabled and unable to work. She thought she could receive some type of assistance but when she went to the social security office they said she had to have been working at the time of the stroke to receive disability assistance and at 62 she still is not eligible for social security what can she do?

A. Regardless of employment at time of disability onset your mom CAN qualify for SSI or SSDI, depending on the numbers of quarters she worked and put into the system. SSI is for those who did not have input to the SS system and are disabled and require assistance. Also any Soc. Sec. benefits her husband MAY have qualified for and his age, if they were married for over 10 years she is eligible for. She is also eligible for Medicaid due to disability. If the local DDU unit [Disability Determinations Unit] has declared her ineligible they are WRONG. Also she can draw down on Soc. Sec. early at age 62. You all have been given bad information. Appeal it!

Should persons receiving government assistance be required to have random drug testing ?
Q. I work for an agency that is paid through the governement and we are randomly drug tested. Should people who receive money from the governement for health assistance and living assistance be required to be drug tested too? They also could be using drugs.

A. YES! I have to be drug tested to earn the money that the govt takes from me to give to them, why shouldn't they be drug tested to receive it!!!
