An auction is a process of buying and selling goods or services by offering them up for bid, taking bids, and then selling the item to the highest bidder. In economic theory, an auction may refer to any mechanism or set of trading rules for exchange.

There are several variations on the basic auction form, including time limits, minimum or maximum limits on bid prices, and special rules for determining the winning bidder(s) and sale price(s). Participants in an auction may or may not know the identities or actions of other participants. Depending on the auction, bidders may participate in person or remotely through a variety of means, including telephone and the internet. The seller usually pays a commission to the auctioneer or auction company based on a percentage of the final sale price.

How should I deal with a broker who sells cars bought from auctions?
Q. A close friend of mine said he would like to introduce me to a local garage that sells cars bought from auctions. (I suppose the correct term to use is "a broker"). Apparently, cars sold this way can be reasonably cheap, and the broker in question also owns a garage that can repair the cars when necessary. As this is a close friend, I don't want to refuse, saying I'll meet the broker, although I don't really know how honest the broker is. Do you have any advice?

A. Buy an extended warranty from a third party and consider that part of the purchase price. If the two add up to more than you are willing to spend, then it is not a good deal. Insist on a carfax report that shows all inscurance claims made for the VIN of the vehicle. Cars bought at auction could have serious frame damage, water or smoke damage too. Great that the guy can fix the cars, but unless you get something in writing that says he will do it for free it doesn't mean a thing. EDIT: He is a middle man, you can pay a small fee and buy a car at an auction and eliminate the middle man mark up if you want to do your homework. Either way inquire about an extended warranty first and call that part of the 'price'.

How much do cars really sell for at police auctions?
Q. I'm looking to buy an suv in decent shape that's a max of 5 to 6 years old. How much can I reallistically expect to pay for it at auction? And if someone knows a site where I can look up police auctions in the Durham NC area, that would be helpful also. I'm looking for a ballpark estimate, not an exact price. Also, I'm an over the road trucker driver and don't get home except a few days a month so going to the police station to ask is not really an option.

A. As already stated, there is no "average" price for vehicles sold at police and government auctions. However, prices are usually lower than you would find at dealers or even from individuals because of the higher risk assumed by buyers -- because the cars can't be driven (they can be started). The following article has some more details: .

How do I find out the time schedule for police auctions in the state of Oregon?
Q. I am trying to find a schedule of dates and times for the police auctions (seized, foreclosed items, etc.) Many sites tell me I can pay for this information, but there must be some free public listing since it's through a government agencyt. Can anyone help?

A. I went to a police auction last Friday Night. It was published in the local newspaper. I purchased a confiscated clothes washing machine and an electric clothes drier in nearly new shape for $150.00. Try calling the local police stations and asking where and when they are going to be held. The police want to make money on their confiscated items so they should be willing to tell everybody where they are being held. Good Luck from a Lucky Buyer.
