Auto auctions are a method of selling new, and most often, used vehicles based on auction system. Auto auctions can be found in most nations, but are often unknown to most people. This is, such as in the case of the United States, because this a protected source for used car dealers. In other countries, such as Japan, auto auctions are well known and used (indirectly) by most people.

Country specific

Japan

Auto auctions are the most popular method to sell used vehicles in Japan. Most customers are Japanese seeking a cheap vehicle to start with or replace their older vehicle. Also there many also trying to sell their vehicles. Individuals though cannot directly use auto auctions, but must go through those holding auction membership. In Japanese law, only dealerships may become members to auto auctions. The way the system is set up allows people to have access to information, but keep the auctions orderly with only professionals actually able to bid.

A small percentage of the dealers that are members of Japanese auto auctions are also used vehicle exporters that most often use the auto auctions as their primary source of used vehicles. Other than these exporters, most members are used vehicle dealership that sell in Japan and are used by Japanese people to find a car they want.

In Japan there are over 30 well known auto auction groups and over 200 auto auction locations throughout Japan. Additionally, there are more smaller auctions held for specialized items.

Can I get a good deal at an auto auction?
Q. I have about $4k in cash to spend on a car (just don't want to take out a loan in this economy). I'm wondering if auto auctions (here in chicago we have a place in waukegan) are worth the trouble and really will save you that much money. What sorts of things should I be on the outlook for if I go?

A. Auctions can save you a lot of money -- if you know what you're doing. They allow you to look over the cars and inspect them, but you can't drive them. So it's best to take along a mechanic friend or someone who can judge a car's condition by examining it. Otherwise, you risk losing your money on a junker. Here's an article that might help: .

Looking to buy an 07 Infiniti M35X through an auto auction. Any auto dealers want to help me out for a fee?
Q. I'm looking to buy the Infiniti M35 AWD with at least the Technology Package (Which basically includes the Journey Package plus the Bose stereo, CD changer with MP3, eight speakers, Nav system which is a must, and rear monitor). New, I'm looking at the low to mid $40K's. Used through a dealer I'm looking at mid to high $30K's. Third party, I'm slightly better at the mid $30K's. I know I can get the same car through an auction in the low $30K's. I have access to Manheim's website but don't have a dealers license, nor do I want to go through the trouble. I'm looking for somebody with a dealers license and who knows what they are doing to give me a hand picking this up at an auction. If it's worth your time, then it's worth $1,000… [cont.]

A. Carmax.com Stock # 4471156 in San Antonio, TX. Not an M35x but close enough for $35K. Who would sell a new car at an auction unless that car has been totaled or who knows what happened to it. Solicitation is not allowed on this forum. If you want an '07 Infiniti M35x, wait until the '08's come out and have fun making the lowest offer possible.
