An auction is a process of buying and selling goods or services by offering them up for bid, taking bids, and then selling the item to the highest bidder. In economic theory, an auction may refer to any mechanism or set of trading rules for exchange. There are several variations on the basic auction form, including time limits, minimum or maximum limits on bid prices, and special rules for determining the winning bidder(s) and sale price(s). Participants in an auction may or may not know the identities or actions of other participants. Depending on the auction, bidders may participate in person or remotely through a variety of means, including telephone and the internet. The seller usually pays a commission to the auctioneer or auction company based on a percentage of the final sale price. From Wikipedia under the

Q. The auction is benefiting a tax exempt organization so if he does it for free could he deduct his normal cost from his taxes? If he would normally charge for this service though, I would think it would be tax deductible as long as the amount he writes off is being turned into the organization? Asked by bennytwo5 - Mon Jan 19 20:33:20 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. No. The value of your time is not deductible. Although it initially seems unfair, there is a very good reason. When you perform services professionally, you get paid and are taxed on that income. When you perform the same services for the charity, you cannot deduct anything, but neither are you being taxed on any income. In essence, it is the same as if they had paid you the income and you turned around and wrote them a check equal to the amount that you were paid. In that case you would have needed to report the earnings on your tax return and then could deduct the chartiable contribution on schedule A. In that instance you would, at best, get a tax deduction equal to your earnings and end up in the same position as if you had… [cont.] Answered by thebigtaxgeek - Tue Jan 20 23:03:31 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Auctioneering" |
