Auction sniping is the process of watching a timed online auction (such as on eBay), and placing a winning bid at the last possible moment (often seconds before the end of the auction), giving the other bidders no time to outbid the sniper. Some bidders do this manually, and others use software designed for the purpose. A bid sniper is a person or software agent who performs auction sniping. There are also online sniping services, where the software agent is run from a website rather than the sniper's own computer. This decreases the failure rate of the snipe, because the website is expected to have more reliable servers that might be quicker to react. Legality and acceptance by auction sitesWhile auction sniping is frowned upon by some people, it does not break any of the rules established by eBay. However, eBay Germany did ban sniping services in 2002. A few other auction sites (such as iGavel, and the New Zealand auction site TradeMe) automatically extend the bid deadline by a few minutes if a bid is placed in the last moments of the auction to give other buyers time to react. There are few possible ways of sniping prevention: one of them is to end the auction at a random time (i.e. ending the auction at an undisclosed time in the final hour). Another simpler alternative is to conduct Online Timeshift Auctions, which allow the auction format to be as simple as a standard online auction, can provide more accurate information about the interest in the auctioned item and avoid auction snipping. (An auction sniping program will do automatic real time bids on Ebay and other auctions, greatly increasing your chance of winning an auction.) Probably a Firefox browser plugin (javascript/XUL etc), as all the web browsing fuctionality is already provided, you just basically have to interface with it, and tell the browser what to do, eg, refresh the page, read values from the page, click links/buttons etc. Would probably be easier than trying to interact with Ebay databases (besides, these will probably not be directly accessable, otherwise they could potentially be hack-able). Answered by K - Wed Jun 25 09:43:54 2008 Question about auction sniping on ebay? Q. Ok, so i was watching a video about auction sniping, and programs. The guy talked about manual auction sniping and program auction sniping, and have a question about each. With manual auction sniping, When you are at the last seconds and lets say the highest bid is 40 dollars, and you are going to snipe it for 60 dollars. In the video, the person entered in 60 dollars, and won the auction for 41 dollars. Does that mean that you can bid for more and ebay will automatically put your value for less if nobody matches it? And with program sniping, what is the best and safest program to use? Q. Last week I placed my bid on an 12-year-old (but famous) game in "Like New" condition and the images are real, not stock photos (I'm not revealing which one it is, until after I choose the correct answer). The auction ends tonight and I am the only one who has placed a bid ($14.99, it started at $9.99). This is my very first auction, so I don't know if I made a mistake. Then I read some "horror" stories from people bidding and getting outbid on the last 10 seconds of the auction. I wanted to buy the game since 2004, but couldn't because I moved and they don't sell the game any more, so I chose eBay. I really want the game and if I buy it new from eBay, I'll need to spend at least 40 dollars (four times the original auction price of $9.99 [cont.] Asked by Jimmy-Fer08 - Sun Jul 12 13:55:33 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. You'd be better bidding your maximum price early, plus one or two cents over the even dollar. If yours is the only bid so far, it will still show up as the current bid being $9.99. If you put in several bids, say 4 more, each just a little more than the previous one, with your highest bid last, any "sniper" would see that this bidder #1 had put in 5 bids even though the price still showed as $9.99. As there is no way for the "sniper" to find out how much you have bid, he is going to think bidder #1 has put in 5 bids, and must be really keen. Even if he himself put in bids, he would be discouraged by finding he was outbid by your highest offer every time. You don't need two windows. In the last 10 minutes or so, the page refreshes… [cont.] Answered by bluebell - Sun Jul 12 14:26:57 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Auction sniping" From Wikiquote under the GNU Free Documentation License.
