An auction is a process of buying and selling goods or services by offering them up for bid, taking bids, and then selling the item to the higest bidder. In economic theory, an auction may refer to any mechanism or set of trading rules for exchange.

There are several variations on the basic auction form, including time limits, minimum or maximum limits on bid prices, and special rules for determining the winning bidder(s) and sale price(s). Participants in an auction may or may not know the identities or actions of other participants. Depending on the auction, bidders may participate in person or remotely through a variety of means, including telephone and the internet. The seller usually pays a commission to the auctioneer or auction company based on a percentage of the final sale price.

We want to start an auction house but hire an auctioneer. Does owner have to have license?
Q. My fiance and I would like to open an auction house in a building we own in Ohio. We would like to run every aspect of the business but hire an auctioneer to do the actual selling on auction nights. Neither one of us wants to actually become an auctioneer. Does anyone else do this or does the auction house owner have to have a auctioneer's license?

Has anyone ever purchased a used state vehicle from an auction house?
Q. If so, about what price do they go for? I'm thinking about going to an auction in a few weeks. Their inventory is most Chevys and Fords around 1998-2001 models with around 1000-15000 miles.

A. the prices aren't that cheap at the sales right now,i go all the time and i don't ever see then under 1500 bucks and that's for one that's really rough, the good ones sell for as much as they can get out of them, car sales are funny one day you,ll go and they will be cheap, the next day the same car if it doesn't sell that day will bring 2 thousand bucks more than they was asking for it the first day,you have to go and bid on them and hope no one out bids you, good luck.

For antiques such as a Victrola, how do I find an auction house that can sell it for me?
Q. I have a victrola I like to sell by auction. I already spoken to 5 auction houses 2 responsed that they sell that many victrolas and they said that they can not promise great results. So they suggest other auction houses but I'm getting the same response can direct me to an auction that would help me. Thank you for your time!

A. There is an auctioneer in my area who will have big auctions in a local warehouse but would prefer to have "Estate" sales because they draw more people who will be looking for old family treasurers. Maybe you should look for that type of venue - who says the items have to be from that estate. Or just sell it to an antique dealer or on consignment at a used furniture store. Antiques seem to sell higher on the East coast as opposed to the Western US.
